The big question always asked is why athletes have a higher lung capacity than people who don’t work out. Mostly you will wonder especially when you watch swimmers holding breath for longer period .The expanded lung capacity always enable athletes to regulate there breath in such a way that there hearts can pump blood more effectively making it a possibility for runners to accomplish marathons and even swimmers to break records.
The main reason for athletes having a larger lung capacity than people who don’t workout is because they work at improving their lung capacity. This is mainly through a strenuous and consistent working schedule. By engaging in sports for as long as many hours, they moderate their breathing with time .Sometimes this will be achieved subconsciously. To increase lung capacity you need to maintain consistency in your training regime. Skipping of days may reduce the effectiveness of the workout. When you are exercising you are programming your lungs to take in more oxygen than normal.
With time you develop a proper timing, speed and depth to breath during training. This is the main reason athletes usually have more muscle content on them than people who don’t work out . Their lungs are used more during the training hence assisting them to develop greater endurance capability of their lungs over time. This enables them to do activities that non-athletes would not even try since it would leave them gasping for breath.
Vigorous exercise help more than slow work outs. With high lung capacity you can accumulate more oxygen therefore perform more strenuous activities without feeling tired. Without enough oxygen performance can be slower.

The first is the anaerobic exercise .This involves weight lifting .This is mainly targeted to strengthening the muscles and adding on extra muscle if combined well with good diet. We also have aerobic exercise. These target the cardiovascular system. You can do activities like running, swimming among others to achieve this. Remember even the heart is a muscle therefore while doing aerobic workout; the heart muscles also get stronger and therefore pump blood harder. This is the reason why an athletes heart beat at rest is much higher than normal.
In general to increase your lung capacity, you need to have a regular training regime both aerobic and anaerobic. This combined with a good diet with a good diet will give you excellent results.
